Nutritional Value at Malfroy School

3/9/2019

Here at Malfroy School we are lucky enough to receive fruit and vegetables daily for every child at school.   This coupled with Fonterra Milk, where the children receive a milk carton daily are important initiatives that help our children to be productive, focused learners.  At Malfroy School we also supply breakfast to our children with the help of Kids Can.  We strongly believe that a child learns better when they are filled with healthy nutritional products and we see the benefits not only in their learning and behaviour, but also in their overall well-being.   We also have healthy lunch options through outside agencies, namely Pita Pit and Ka Pai Kai available to those who desire.  Right now, we have made a commitment to a 'Waste Free' initiative.  The children are expected to take all packets/pottles, gladwrap or anything really that they bring to school, back home with them.  We have seen a dramatic drop in our rubbish bins already and the children are beginning to be more aware of the effect this has on their environment.  Our hope is that this teaches our children to 'live more consciously and sustainably' for their future.

Keep up the great commitment to health and well-being Malfroy School!

This year we had many year five and six children turn up to our first couple of hui/meetings to begin our Health Busters team.  They were excited and keen to begin 2019 with student voice in leading our health and well-being initiatives we already have in place.  Go for it Malfroy!

Hikoi  2 School Day

Our first duty this year is to promote the Rotorua Lakes Council led "walk to kura" day.  This will be happening on Friday 22nd March at the following locations:

Ford Road Shops, Jervis Road Shops and Pererika Road Shops at 8.15am.

We encourage all parents/caregivers to jump onboard the 'walking bus' or even drop your child off at one of the closest locations to leave at 8.15am.  Teachers will be there from 8.00am.

Gold Accreditation for Malfroy School!

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Malfroy School has officially attained their Health Promoting Schools Gold Accreditation!

Health Promoting Schools (HPS) is an internationally recognised framework utilised in over 50 countries which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of school communities through a whole of school approach.

Toi Te Ora runs a unique HPS accreditation scheme across the Bay of Plenty and Lakes which helps participating schools develop and implement effective health and wellbeing strategies, and then recognises their efforts following an assessment against a set of criteria.  The accreditation scheme is implemented into three accreditation standards; bronze, silver and gold.  By the time a school attains gold, HPS is fully embedded into the school’s culture, key documentation, strategic planning, monitoring and review systems.

Malfroy School has been working hard since beginning in 2009.  We have introduced healthy food options for lunches on two days of the week and also continue to provide healthy breakfasts with the help of Kids Can.  Other initiatives that we have embedded at Malfroy are physical activity through our student led lunch-times sports activities, anti-bullying strategies and Sunsmart awareness.

We will be officially presented with this award on Friday April 5th.

Health Busters end of year trip.

Health Busters Malfroy set out to visit two of our school lunch providers.  Our first stop was Pita Pit Central, where we experienced their brand new educational classroom.  We learnt about everything from what vegetables they used and also how they tasted!  Some of us learnt the hard way of how a jalapeno tastes!  But we survived the jalapeno's and carried on with the preparation of the vegetables and how the rotation system works in their very organised chiller.  The main message that we learnt from Pita Pit was how sanitation and cleanliness was so important and also how yummy vegetables are when put in a Pita!  We finished off our visit with a free Pita Pit!

Next stop was Ka Pai Kai who are a non-profit organisation that provide a healthy, affordable alternative for lunch at Malfroy.  Again, they were also strict with cleanliness and the importance of making sure every strand of hair was tucked in your hair net!  We had so much fun making bliss balls and we got to have one that had already been chilled.

We would like to thank both Pita Pit - Phil, Jose and Mandy and Ka Pai Kai - Karyn, Dudu, Renee and Anneke for giving us your precious time.  We had a fun day and look forward to seeing you again in 2019!

Term Three Here We Go!

Welcome back to students and our Malfroy community!  We hope you have had a relaxing break and are ready to go!

Waste-Free Bring a Sandwich Day

Our first initiative for our Health Busters this term is to co-ordinate our very own "Waste-Free Bring a Sandwich Day",  We will be having this on each Thursday of the week, starting from week 2 - Thursday 2nd August.

We envision our Malfroy students focusing on less or even better NO rubbish brought to school on at least one day a week.  We thought we would make it even easier for parents and add to our promotion ' "Bring a Sandwich Day".   So that means less processed foods with packaging and plastic and MORE food like our parents or even grandparents had when they went to school.

So come on everybody and get behind this initiative.  We can do it Malfroy!

Each term, Malfroy school host a whanau breakfast, for our Malfroy community.  We put on extra yummy food to cater for our whanau.  During the Maori New Year we celebrate Matariki through a whanau breakfast and concert.  Our staff generously donate food items to give to families who draw the lucky numbers.  This year we had a huge turnout and the hall was buzzing with lots of whanau.  Remember, to come to our next one!
