Remember every Thursday in term 3 is our Waste Free Day. Please support this initiative.
Well done to Room 16 who have been taking a tally of their waste.
Welcome back to students and our Malfroy community! We hope you have had a relaxing break and are ready to go!
Waste-Free Bring a Sandwich Day
Our first initiative for our Health Busters this term is to co-ordinate our very own "Waste-Free Bring a Sandwich Day", We will be having this on each Thursday of the week, starting from week 2 - Thursday 2nd August.
We envision our Malfroy students focusing on less or even better NO rubbish brought to school on at least one day a week. We thought we would make it even easier for parents and add to our promotion ' "Bring a Sandwich Day". So that means less processed foods with packaging and plastic and MORE food like our parents or even grandparents had when they went to school.
So come on everybody and get behind this initiative. We can do it Malfroy!
Each term, Malfroy school host a whanau breakfast, for our Malfroy community. We put on extra yummy food to cater for our whanau. During the Maori New Year we celebrate Matariki through a whanau breakfast and concert. Our staff generously donate food items to give to families who draw the lucky numbers. This year we had a huge turnout and the hall was buzzing with lots of whanau. Remember, to come to our next one!
What does this mean?
It means that at Malfroy School we promote drinking water at school and discourage any other drinks. For example, we strongly discourage fizzy drinks, juice and flavoured milk. There are large amounts of sugar that are in these and we teach our students that water is the best. We are also thankful that we have the opportunity to give each child a carton of plain milk each day - thanks to the Fonterra Milk in Schools initiative. So remember - Malfroy is a Water Only School!
Here's a few pictures of our winners of our Pink Shirt Day to end our National Bully Free Week of activities and lessons. We really enjoyed our school assembly organised by our Health Buster team and Mrs McLaren. Thanks for making the pink cup cakes too Mrs McLaren. We had fun decorating the cupcakes and our own tee-shirts to promote Pink Shirt Day. This was our first whole school participation in Pink Shirt Day and we all got behind the important message! Ka rawe Malfroy School!
Big shout out to our volunteer gardener, Mrs Gray, who comes in her own time every Wednesday and Friday afternoon to help out with our gardens here at Malfroy. Here are a few pictures of our strawberry patch getting a clean out by our Health Busters.
Mrs Gray taught us about the difference between a weed and part of the strawberry plant that we wanted to recycle.
Recently the middle school celebrated their Cultures Learning unit with a finale of food and cultures. Whaea Tuini was able to take a couple of pictures to show the connections with different cultures here at Malfroy. I could tell that everyone thoroughly enjoyed their day because they were all busy eating all the different ethnic foods! Way to go, middle school!
PS. Thank you for the delicious food!
Tena koutou katoa to our Malfroy School community!
It's great to be back to a new year, new beginnings and maintaining our status as a Health Promoting School. We are proud to say we have some amazing initiatives here at our school to help with the health and well-being of all students/tamariki here at Malfroy and look forward to 2018 being an abundant year of learning and success. We will keep you all posted of our journey throughout the year.
Ka Pai Kai - this term we started our second healthy lunch alternative for lunch orders alongside our Pita Pit lunches, Ka Pai Kai is available every Tuesday for lunch orders and so far is a great success. The lunches are a big hit with our children and the staff agree that it is much better to have a healthy alternative to help with learning and behaviour. So, big thank you to this wonderful initiative in Rotorua - Ka Pai Kai!
Sunsmart - we are a sunsmart accredited school and it is compulsory for all students to wear sunhats in terms 1 and 4. We also make sure that all outside activities are limited to early morning or under shade activities, Well done Malfroy!
Kia ora koutou
We look forward to meeting any parents who have a spare ten minutes in our whanau hui tonight at 5.30pm. We have a special guest, Mr Pita Pit, who will be there giving live demonstrations of what is on offer to Malfroy students every Friday of the school week. We also have some of our Health Buster team presenting a short video clip of what our students around the school think are healthy alternatives for their lunches.
See you all there!
Hey everybody! Hope you all had a well-deserved break and are ready for another term of optimal learning! Remember we are a Health Promoting School, which means that we support health and well-being initiatives that compliment our tamariki! Our team will be focusing on nutritional aspects as well as some exciting ideas to get our community on board with a Father/son or daughter cooking class in promotion of Father's Day and a Cultural theme cooking class in term 4. We will let you know the finer details as the dates get closer.
We'll leave you with some photos of our last term's Matariki Whanau breakfast. It was a huge success and thank you to staff who donated food items for whole meal packages for lucky spot prizes. Well done Malfroy!
NB: Due to our term and hall bookings being jam packed for this term we have had to cancel our father's day and son/daughter cooking class. Hope to get into it next term!
